A Sense of Community

Due to the nature of my day job, I have been given opportunities to incorporate my artwork for the benefit of the community. Using my artistic eye in graphic designs to promote student accomplishments and events is a huge part of my daily work, however two specific occasions remain at the forefront of my community involvement as an artist.

The impact of 2020 hit many young students and graduates hard. Experiencing the impact firsthand, the distance between the staff and students was felt on a deeper level than day-to-day interactions. Using art as an outlet, I created the first piece as a reflection of the sense of loss we were all feeling.

Inside the eye is the landmark clock tower, original to the building which was erected in 1927.

As the year progressed and we adapted to the change in normal, we found creative ways to stay engaged with our students and give them the best experience we possibly could. To commemorate the year and celebrate the graduating Class of 2020, I created a second piece.

The reference photo was taken as one of the graduates walked to receive their diploma with our teachers lining the sidewalk. Having to be creative with the commencement ceremony, it was unique and memorable.

In 2022, I joined the Principal and staff of my children's elementary school in a beautification project for a newly installed security fence that surrounds the campus. Once I had a clear idea of the vision for the project, I knew exactly how I wanted to tie it all together.

Using my digital art to design such a big project was a new adventure for me, but one I took as an honor to be part of. I enjoy projects that help bring communities together. The school worked with each grade level on themes, while I designed mustangs from colt to adult to represent the physical and mental growth elementary students go through from kindergarten to fifth grade. Using the school colors, each vibrant panel transitions the student painted planks from one grade level to the next.

“My reward is seeing the kids’ involvement.” Barchus said. “I’ve always wanted to cultivate art in kids, and the fact that we were able to incorporate them into the program and fence is my favorite part about this.” - The Daily News, Longview, WA

The end result is beautiful and the community response was remarkable, many commenting on how much the uplifting bright colors and designs add to the school. The incorporation of the student art is the perfect touch to a very heartfelt project. This is truly a very special event for me as an artist, a mom and a colleague of those involved in the process.
